Canon i550 Ink Monitor

I have been using this printer for a while in draft mode . The black ink monitor showed little usage. I tried to print, and zow! Low ink. From one session to the next the ink monitor went from almost full to almost empty. Is this a feature of this printer, or is there something wrong?
